Chains & gearing
A well-maintained chain can last up to 20,000 km (around 12,000 miles), but sooner or later every chain wears out. You can tell a chain is worn when it's slack on the rear sprocket – and you can tell a sprocket is worn when its teeth have turned into so-called "shark fins". A poorly lubricated chain that's covered in rust needs replacing too! Heavy use and a lot of strain can even cause a chain like that to snap.
Gearing
When you change your front or rear sprocket, remember that the gearing lets you adjust the torque to suit your needs. If you're after acceleration and top speed isn't that important to you, go for shorter gearing. But watch out! The engine will then tend to rev out very quickly. If top speed matters more to you, you'll need taller gearing – and you'll also need longer to reach that top speed. Base your decision on the kind of roads you ride most: motorways, A-roads, town or even off-road.
Looks
We also stock rear sprockets and chains in various colours, so you can add a styling accent here too. By the way, when you order a chain kit, you get the complete kit: front sprocket, rear sprocket and chain. We'd also recommend O-ring chains, as they don't rust inside as quickly. Popular brands for chains and sprockets include DID, RR, JT, JMP and Esjot. So if you're looking for a new chain for your Honda CBR 125 R, Beta RR 125 LC, Yamaha DT 125 or KTM RC 125, these are the brands to go for.
