Motorbike indicators
The stock indicators on your bike are usually far too big and stick out way too much. We know the problem – which is why indicators are among the first parts people swap when personalising their bike. Because indicators are also about safety, they should carry an E-mark. That means the aftermarket indicators have been tested in an EU country for road compliance and guarantee good enough visibility. Of course, you can also fit indicators without an E-mark, but we'd advise against it – your MOT tester will also check whether they're clearly visible and working.
LED indicators for your bike
Almost every accessories supplier, whether Motoflow, Shin-Yo or Koso, now sells LED indicators only. LED indicators have the big advantage that their shape can be designed freely, because unlike with bulbs there's no need to worry about lighting up the whole housing evenly. LEDs can also be produced in any light colour, so the amber colour doesn't have to come from the lens or a coloured bulb. The downside is their much lower operating voltage, which varies depending on the LED and has to be adapted to 12 V by electronics inside the indicator. Their much lower power draw (wattage) is also a slight drawback that has to be compensated for with resistors.
Conventional motorbike indicators
The conventional type – indicators as we all know them. These usually come with 21-watt bulbs, which are available in different versions. So when you replace the bulbs, make sure you choose the right bulb fitting in our shop! Like the rest of the electrical system, the operating voltage is 12 volts.
Resistors & relays
On almost all vehicles, the actual flashing of the indicators is controlled by an electrical or electronic relay that's matched to the electrical load of the bulbs. However, some cars and more and more bikes now have the entire lighting controlled by electronics in a control unit. Because you can't swap this electronics for a load-independent relay, you need to wire a load resistor to the much lower-powered LED indicators. That way, the control unit – or an older relay – won't notice that the indicators have been changed.
Here's what to bear in mind when swapping:
Use ONE resistor PER indicator. These MUST be ordered separately!
If the relay can be swapped, check the number of pins!
Bikes with ONLY one shared indicator warning light for both sides usually have TWO pins.
Bikes with SEPARATE warning lights for left and right usually have THREE pins!
But it's best to check this beforehand.
A little tip on the side
Sometimes indicators steam up and the water just won't evaporate. Simply unscrew your indicators and put them in the oven at around 50 °C – the water should then evaporate. Once you've found the leak, you can seal it with silicone sealant.
Legal requirements for motorbike indicators
There's no getting around the law here either, so there are a few requirements your new indicators have to meet. It's a dry subject, but an important one. The flash rate must be 90 flashes per minute, with a tolerance of +/- 30. Indicators approved for the front carry the category numbers 1, 1a, 1b or 11; those approved for the rear can be recognised by the numbers 2, 2a, 2b or 12. Indicators approved for both front and rear carry two numbers accordingly. Under EU rules, front indicators must be at least 240 mm apart and rear indicators at least 180 mm apart. Their height above the road must be between 350 mm and 1,200 mm at both front and rear. For bikes built and registered before 1998, the old dimensions still apply: rear indicators at least 240 mm apart, front indicators at least 340 mm apart, and each at least 100 mm from the headlight. On these older bikes too, the minimum height of the indicators above the road is 350 mm. All these dimensions apply to conventional and LED indicators alike.
E-marks on motorbike indicators and tail lights
With an E-mark you're always on the safe side, because it shows that the indicator, LED indicator or tail light is approved in the EU. That saves you having to carry extra papers or certificates, so you won't have any problems at your MOT or at a police check. You're of course free to fit parts without an E-mark too – but then you have to expect to be told at a check to put everything back into a road-legal state.
