Motorbike mirrors keep you in the picture at all times
Motorbike mirrors have one key job: giving you a perfect view of what's behind you. Only with decent mirrors can you be sure you always know what's going on in the traffic behind. If you keep a close eye on the vehicles behind you, you can react quickly and correctly in critical situations – so it's all about your own safety. Most stock motorbike mirrors are fairly large. On the one hand that makes sense, of course, but on the other it doesn't always do much for the styling of your bike. With new mirrors for your 125, you can give your bike a fresh look without compromising your safety. As with almost everything, there are clear legal rules for the mirrors on your bike, and you need to stick to them so you get waved through at a roadside check and don't run into trouble at your MOT.
Standard motorbike mirrors
The standard mirrors on your bike usually do their job, but they don't just look boring – most of the time they're downright ugly. Aftermarket mirrors with a high-end design and quality build quickly change the whole look of your bike and make your KTM Duke 125, Yamaha WR 125 or Yamaha MT 125, for example, look much sportier.
They're also one of the easiest and cheapest upgrades out there: around 5 minutes and roughly €10–20, and your new mirrors are on. Bar end mirrors take a bit longer, of course – but at around 15 minutes, as you usually have to trim the grips, that's still reasonable. You can see how to do it in one of our YouTube videos. Besides looks, safety is an important point here too, so make sure your mirrors are E-marked and come from a well-known manufacturer such as Puig, Koso, Rizoma, Motoflow or Highsider.
Mirrors from these manufacturers always have a minimum glass size and give you a good view behind. They also usually come with real mirror glass. It's also important that the mirrors are easy to adjust, hold their angle at higher speeds and don't fold in – because readjusting your mirrors on the motorway is difficult and definitely not recommended.
By the way: bikes with a top speed below 100 km/h (62 mph) only need one mirror – on the right-hand side in the UK!
Legal requirements for motorbike mirrors
Here's a bit of dry theory, but it's important when choosing new mirrors for your 125: UN ECE Regulation No. 81 (ECE R81) sets out exactly what a motorbike mirror has to meet. Mirrors must be adjustable, including their angle. Sharp edges and protruding parts are not allowed in principle, to rule out any risk of injury. The reflecting surface must be at least 69 cm², so mirrors the size of a postage stamp aren't legal. There are even more requirements for curvature radii, reflectance and edge radii – we'll spare you those here, but if you're interested you can read them in the regulation mentioned above. If you choose mirrors for your 125 that carry an E-mark, you're always on the safe side: these mirrors are approved in the EU and meet all the legal requirements, so you can fit them to your bike without any problems.
