The perfect tail tidy for your bike
Most riders can't stand the stock number plate holder. On the KTM Duke 125 and the Yamaha YZF-R 125, for example, it's almost half the size of the whole bike! That's why a short, as-invisible-as-possible tail tidy is simply a must for anyone who wants to change something on their bike.
As with pretty much everything, there are legal rules for number plates on bikes. In some countries there's good news for 125 riders, though: in Germany, for example, you can use smaller plates on a 125. They're much less noticeable than the big ones and blend in nicely with the look of your bike. Even so, many manufacturers still deliver their bikes with the big plate holder from the factory, which is why it's often one of the first parts to get swapped.
What the law says about motorbike number plates
To ride your 125 not just on the track but on public roads, you need a number plate with a matching plate holder on your bike – obviously! The plate must be fitted at the rear with the holder so it's clearly visible. It must not be covered, taped over or altered in any way. There's no leeway here, because it's important that everyone on the road, just like you, can be clearly identified. Your number plate is basically your bike's business card.
The details vary from country to country, so always check the rules where you live. In Germany, for example, motorbikes from over 50cc up to 125cc with a maximum output of 11 kW can get special number plates. A standard plate for a 125 there measures up to 280 mm wide and up to 200 mm high. On a bike, plates like that are really impractical and look pretty odd from behind. That's why German lawmakers introduced a special rule for 125s in 2011: now you can choose between plates 180 mm, 200 mm or 220 mm wide, with a height of 200 mm. A small plate like that looks much better on a bike, and you no longer feel like you're dragging a plank around behind the seat. A tail tidy and a small plate simply look much sportier.
In a nutshell:
Your new plate holder should fit precisely, so you don't have to drill extra holes in the bodywork when fitting it. The angle should be adjustable – in Germany, for example, the plate may be tilted by no more than 30 degrees from vertical. Anything beyond the legal limit is no longer quite legal and can earn you a warning from the police.
Tail tidy quality
A good-quality plate holder should also be powder-coated so it's weatherproof – in other words, it won't rust and isn't prone to scratches from stone chips. It's also important that the angle (as mentioned above) and certain distances, such as the spacing between the indicators, are right. In Germany, for example, the top edge of the plate must be no higher than 120 cm and the bottom edge at least 30 cm above the ground. Number plates also have to be lit, so you can either refit your old number plate light or replace it with an LED light – which looks much better and more modern at night.
