The rectifier or regulator changes the AC voltage generated in the alternator to the DC voltage of 12V used in the vehicle electrical system and keeps the voltage within a certain tolerance range. This charges the battery and ensures that incandescent lamps, for example, do not burn out.

Since this component is exposed to very high temperature loads, it is not uncommon for it to break down.
